A Spiritual Midwife is someone who has the God-given ability to spiritually see, coach, push, and guide someone through a transitional and transformational moment in their life, also known as the spiritual birthing process. They are a purpose pusher, deliverance minister, and comforter or soother. They must possess certain attributes and characteristics while working with God’s beloved vessels.
Purpose Pusher
A Spiritual Midwife doesn’t help someone get purpose; they are there to push people towards their purpose. Before the foundations of the Earth, God placed purpose inside of each individual. Spiritual Midwives are the assistants and coaches that sense what the Lord is saying and doing in someone’s life. They can also see what still needs to come forth and push that person into their purpose with scripture, prayer, guidance, tough love, and encouragement. It is the goal of a Spiritual Midwife to push the person into their God-given assignment, leaving behind their will in the Garden of Gethsemane just as Christ did.
Example: Mordecai persuades Esther to see the King (Esther 4:13-16)
13 Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews.
14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
15 Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer,
16 Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
Deliverance Minister (Servant)
A Spiritual Midwife is a minister of God. The word minister in Hebrew means servant. It means to attend, to worship, and to contribute. Yes, we are God’s servants, but Spiritual Midwives are servant-focused and assignment-focused. They know that the finish line has a rough, bumpy road yet they continue to labor with the expectant despite the challenges. They are focused on the end goal and are filled with the desire to see that person cross the finish line.
Example: Isaiah 61:6
“But ye shall be named the Priests of the Lord: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.”
A Spiritual Midwife, as a servant of the Most High God, preaches good tidings in rough times. In the midst of someone else’s chaos, they understand that the Lord is pulling that person towards the manifestation of their purpose or deliverance from something/someone that is hindering them. They are called to set captives free, bind up the brokenhearted, and open the doors that bind prisoners. They serve with a pleasant attitude, exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit. Although they can be meek, they walk in authority, power, miracles, signs, and wonders.
Example: Isaiah 61:1-2
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
A Soother & Beautifier
A Spiritual Midwife knows that being uncomfortable, emotionally sensitive, and extremely unsure are indicators that something is getting ready to come forth. They are sensitive to the needs of others and can identify, counsel, and guide them through birthing and/or deliverance. They can dust off someone who’s gone through the fire (beauty for ashes), they bring joy to those who mourn, and they encourage praise to those who were heavy.
There were two midwives in the Bible named Shiphrah and Puah. It is the meaning of Puah’s name that indicates that Spiritual Midwives must be able to soothe someone. They must have a soft tone, a trusting demeanor, and a lovable personality. If you were mourning, would you be able to receive the oil of joy from someone who was untrustworthy, sassy, or unpleasant?
Shiphrah’s name means to beautify. The meaning of her name suggests that Spiritual Midwives have to work in dirty situations. You don’t clean items that are already spotless. When it’s your job to beautify something, you can’t be afraid of getting your hand dirty. The Bible talks about giving someone beauty for ashes. How can someone receive beauty from a person whose nose is always turned up at their mess? Spiritual Midwives can’t be judgmental, haughty, or undervalue those they are called to help. That is like giving a homeless person a chance to shower, but talking about how horrible they smell, how matted their hair is, and how poor their hygiene is. Your good work becomes null and void, and you make the one person you’re supposed to be encouraging more deflated and broken.
Example: Isaiah 61:3
To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.
